Originating in the Jewish tradition and spreading through folk practices around the world, the magical use of the Book of Psalms has been a tried-and-true grimoire for Folk Magic for more than 12 centuries. This class will explore the introduction and dispersion of the magical use of Psalms, from the first collection of such uses around the year 1,000 to the present day. We will explore the theory and practice of psalmic magic, compare and contrast texts and traditions, and learn the use and applications of many of the 150 Psalms. This class is open and welcoming to practitioners of all spiritual and theological inclinations!This is a 120 minute, foundational level lecture and workshop.About the Presenter:Moses became interested in the spiritual arts from the older generations of his Persian Jewish family, where he saw the matriarchs consult the unseen with coffee cups, and the respected patriarchs speaking in hushed tones about changing situations by reciting psalms and carrying calligraphied amulets. He spent his undergraduate years studying cultural anthropology with a focus on African diasporic traditions and indigenous magicoreligious systems, before completing graduate studies on occultism in 20th century counterculture literature. He has worked for the past half decade as a full-time conjurer, preparing spiritual formulas, performing ritual workings, writing and teaching on folk magic and religion.
