Elf shot. Dvergrslag. Maladies known by many names but bound together by the same thread: conditions with Otherworldly origins. Despite perceived fantastical origins, they are mentioned beyond regional folklore and are found seemingly everywhere from firsthand accounts such as the testimony of Isobel Gowdie to early medical texts like the Lacnuga. This class will explore a myriad of ailments caused by elves and dwarfs (and sometimes witches!) along with their historical context as well as the protections and remedies used against them.
About the Presenter:
Inspired by the stories of her sea-faring elders, Nay (she/her) has been a lifelong student of folk magic as well as a variety of esoteric traditions. While she may be best known for her love and copious research on household spirits, this passion is rivaled by the tales of elves, dwarfs, and faeries she heard as a child. She is delighted to share the practical and magical approaches from yesteryear regarding the afflictions caused by the Othersas in addition to some of her biggest folkloric obsessions with you all.
