About the event
This lecture focuses on reproductive justice magic and womb-healing. Through the study of the history of abortion, we are able to see the complexities and nuances of agency in the past and the interconnected relationships between medicine, magic, and religion. In particular, this lecture will focus on Brigit of Ireland; known as both a Christian saint and ancient goddess. Her holy well in Kildare has been a space for womb-healing for many centuries and Arica will share both personal magical experiences and how this is accessible to all of us. Womb-healing is open to people of all sexes and genders and is an important part of addressing things like the mother-wound, our own existence, and the veils between worlds.
About the Presenter:
Medieval Archaeology. Their interdisciplinary research is on gender and early medieval Wales with an emphasis on material culture, inscriptions, and hagiography. This work connects to magical practices through root work, connection to land, ancestor worship, preservation of culture, language, and teachings, tending to the bones, and the power of narrative charms. Their past research includes the history and archaeology of early medieval folklore, magic, witchcraft, sex, and gender in early medieval Ireland and Wales, feminist history, Latin American history, gender, and religion. Arica also writes feminist, queer, and witchy poetry. They believe magic is in intentional everyday practices.
