All cultures used smoke in ritual and medicine. Today there are many hard conversations about the sustainable use of White Sage specifically and other threatened sacred plants used by indigenous peoples in North America. There are plants that people of non-indigenous ancestry can happily use for the purpose that White Sage has come to occupy and also to combat the destruction of sacred plant populations and the continuous disregard for the needs of indigenous peoples and their cultural and religious life.
