Anchoring spirits to objects is a practice found in many traditions, with purposes ranging from benevolent to nefarious. Sentient spirits can be tethered to objects to limit the harm they cause to others, for example, or objects can be offered to spirits as a refuge and place of rest. The conjuration of thoughtforms or egregores, which are spirits created for and limited to a singular purpose, can also involve anchoring to objects. This can be done for a variety of purposes, such as offering protection to the holder or the space they are in, creating havoc or haunting phenomena, and so much more. Such activities must be taken with care, however, as all spirits require feeding, care, and direction.
