There are few folks who carry the amount of verbal lore as those who have spent time on the sea, and fewer still that hold as many superstitions, and signals of omen, be they prosperous or ill. Whether it be of the Pacific, Atlantic or tides on further horizons, seafaring is fraught with peril, and certainly not without a unique host of taboos and rituals to evade the wrath of indifferent divinities, cruel storms or the nigh omnipresent awareness of what befalls those who ignore the “laws of the wild blue. The tales of those that have braved the nautical lifestyle provide a vast body of folklore and traditions that run as deep as the briny depths in which this exclusive lore was born. Legends of fierce creatures, and supernatural dangers linger as heavy and as tangible as the smoke of canon fire, stories that continue to be entrenched in our modern ideas and myths to this day. What was the source of these strange tales? Amongst what cultures were certain traditions borrowed and expanded upon? This lecture intends to draw out the sources of the tales of weather witching, knotcunning, and the rites and rituals employed to avoid that enigmatic nautical devil, Davey Jones. Furthermore, we will embark on a metaphoric excursion into the cursed locations and other hauntings with nothing but a crudely scribed map and the stars as our guides.
